I received some TMP36 temperature sensors that I was going to use in a project. I want to bread board the circuit before I commit it to a PCB. But, the package I ordered is a surface mount package and doesn’t bread board very well. So, to do this I’ll have to mount the TMP36 on a piece of perf board. I’ll take a series of photographs and show you how I do this.
You can see that the TMP36 is very small. It may be a bit difficult to put it on the perf board but, I think it is doable.
The first thing that I have to do is doctor the pads a bit. There are 3 pins on one side of the part and 2 pins on the other. The 2 pins fit the pads fine but the 3 pins don’t. I’ll have to trim some of the pad away to make it fit.
If you look closely at the above image you will see where I have trimmed the pad just a bit. I also flipped the part over so you can see the pin configuration. Now we are ready to solder the surface mount part to the board.
You can see that I have soldered the SMD device to the pads on the perf board. Now it is time to solder on some pins. We need 3 on one side and 2 on the other.
With the pins soldered in I was thinking about using 30 guage wire to connect the pins of the SMD to the through hole pins but, when I saw how close the pins were to each other I decided I could use some resistor leads connect the pins together. This is working out better than I expected.
With the pins connected we are ready to put it into a bread board and wire it up.
